Validating the e-Framework

Purpose of this project work

This project will contribute to the validation of the e-Framework by

  • Contributing the experience gained in the use of the e-Framework technical approach in projects such as Federated Repositories for Education (FRED), Persistent Identifier Linking Infrastructure (PILIN) and Learner Identity Management Framework (LIMF) to the review of the e-Framework Technical Model.
  • Collaborating with members of the Australian e-Research community to apply the e-Framework tools and methods to a selection of e-Research activities to produce documentation for the community.
  • Identifying refinements that can be made to e-Framework documentation based on experience using the tools and methods.

Description of the work

The validation and refinement process consists of several strands of work:

Context

The Validating the e-Framework Project is the final phase of funding* of the RUBRIC and e-Framework Project.

The e-Framework for Education and Research is an initiative that was initially established by the UK's Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and Australia's Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). In 2007, the two founding partners were joined by the New Zealand Ministry of Education (NZ MoE) and The Netherlands SURF Foundation (SURF). The mission of the partnernership is Collaborating to realise the strategic potential of Information and Communication Technology for Education and Research

Early work of the e-Framework Partnership has addressed multiple challenges posed by service-oriented approaches to ICT systems analysis and design. The e-Framework Partnership has developed a common approach to the description of service oriented design and analysis, commonly known as the e-Framework. The e-Framework includes a set of resources and methodology for describing the relationship between business processes and a service-oriented architecture that serves it.

The e-Framework approach was designed to be iterative and to benefit from the experience gained in its use. In 2009 this will happen in two ways:

  • The experience gained in using the technical approach will be used to review and update the technical model and formalise its documentation. Reviewing the model against experience validates the base assumptions of the e-Framework approach. Formalising the documentation facilitates understanding by a technical audience and comparison with other frameworks.
  • The documented technical approach will be applied to real situations, both to validate its use as a modelling and analytical tool, and to further refine the e-Framework itself. This will be done in different ways by different partners.

Period

January 2009 to December 2009
